Password Protected Feeds

Updated by George Cox

Downcast happily supports password protected feeds. You can subscribe to a password protected feed by adding the feed manually and entering your credentials at the same time. You can also enter or change your credentials later in the podcast's settings.

Authentication Problems

If you're having an issue with a password protected feed, it is almost certainly due to authentication issues. This can be caused by entering invalid credentials, account related issues with the publisher, or, on macOS, Keychain issues.

Fixing Authentication Issues

iOS

  • Tap the Podcast
  • Tap the Settings button (gear icon)
  • Carefully re-enter your credentials
  • That is usually enough. But, if you are still having problems, delete the feed and resubscribe, making sure to enter the correct credentials.
  • If you're *still* having a problem, contact the publisher to make sure your account isn't locked and that they don't need you to use an alternative feed URL.
  • If you're **still** having a problem, submit your log file and a detailed explanation of the problem, along with the name of the affected feed:  How to submit your log file

macOS

  • Right-click the podcast and then click Preferences
  • Carefully re-enter your credentials
  • That is usually enough. But, if you are still having problems, delete the feed and resubscribe, making sure to enter the correct credentials.
  • Sometimes the macOS Keychain doesn't cooperate with Downcast. This is where we store your credentials for password protected podcasts. To make sure Keychain has the right info. We suggest the following:
    • Open Keychain Access
    • On the left, under "Category", select "Passwords"
    • Search for part of the feed URL for podcast that isn't working for you
    • There should be at least one result.
    • The easiest thing to do is delete all the results, then re-enter your credentials in Downcast one more time.
    • An alternative is to manually inspect each entry to make sure each entry has an "Account" that matches your username for the feed, that the "Where" field matches the feed URL exactly, and that, after clicking "Show password" that the password is correct.
  • If you're **still** having a problem, submit your log file and a detailed explanation of the problem, along with the name of the affected feed:  How to submit your log file
